A Customized Approach - The Assessment
divider-01-free-img

The purpose of the initial assessment is to identify underlying challenges that could be creating roadblocks to handwriting success. We use a combination of functional and standardized testing.

I tell the kids that I am a handwriting detective and looking for clues to help solve the “mystery of the messy handwriting.” We do a lot of things together including fun activities with their hands, a little bit of writing, movement activities, drawing and looking at pictures.

The Results

The assessment is always an in-person activity.  As stated above, we are observing the child performing a variety of activities to see how they perform functions they are called upon to do in the classroom on a daily basis.

After we complete this step, the child gets to "go shopping" with "bravo bucks" in the S2S store, then we say goodbye to complete the assessment write-up.

We schedule a Zoom call with the parent(s) to review the outcomes and suggest a course of action to resolve the issues the child is dealing with.  If the parent agrees with our findings and recommended plan of attack, we schedule the student to begin to address:

  • Primitive Reflex Integration

The first step is to integrate your child’s primitive reflexes. When your child’s reflexes are integrated their signs and symptoms are reduced and learning becomes easier.

  • Create Building Blocks for Learning

Preparing your child’s body for optimal learning is vital to their academic success. Here we develop the building blocks for learning and discover the impact they have on your child’s learning development.

  • Handwriting Improvement

Since "messy handwriting" is what people notice first, realize it is the third item we address.  Our handwriting therapy is now ready to tackle the real issue, the fine motor skills needed to do well in the classroom.

Handwriting

Fine motor skills, motor planning, and coordination lay the foundation for handwriting to be easy and successful. When these skills are not fully developed, your child will experience frustration, and be less confident in their classwork.
